Brahms Society Orchestra |
About Brahms SocietyWho We Are, What We PlayBrahms Society was founded as The Holden Consort at Harvard Univerity in 1996. Each summer since then, the orchestra has presented concerts of choral and symphonic works including each of the Brahms symphonies, piano concerti, and the German Requiem, along with major works of Beethoven, Mozart, Stravinsky, Dvorak, Sibelius, Schumann, and many others. The group's tradition is to take traditions away from these classics and present them in ways that are spontaneous, energetic, thought-provoking, and accessibile, without artistic compromises. The diverse group is made up of budding music professionals, teachers, Harvard students, alumni, and members of Boston's music community, with the common goal of amateur music-making at the highest possible musical, technical, and spiritual levels. In 2002, the group formally changed its name to the Brahms Society Orchestra, in recognition of the fact that we play a heck of a lot of Brahms. Our Conductors and SoloistsBrahms Society is committed to providing opportunities to young conductors and soloists beginning their careers. Past music directors include Matthew Bester, Paul Mattal, Benjamin Rous, and Alex Misono; soloists have included Anne Harley, Aaron Engebreth, Miranda Loud, Dan Hershey, Albert Kim, Jeffrey Juan Choque, Joshua Packard, Sonya Chung, and Dmitri Dover. Our ThanksBrahms Society is deeply indebted to Harvard University and the Masters of Lowell House and Sarah Eggleston in particular, who provide rehearsal spaces, performance venues, and innumerable other forms of assistance. The group is infinitely indebted to its organizer emeritus, Filbert Hong. |
